It’s quite a bold statement to make that to play better golf and finally see the results you want in your golf swing and golf game is to not spend so much time working on and thinking about the positions you are getting into during your golf swing.

This principle is really a big foundation of what I am wanting to teach you from The Art of Simple Golf as it’s been a catalyst in my own golf games rejuvenation and enjoyment (learn more about the evolution of my game and coaching here)  as I have coached played and trained around the world. Along this journey I came to my own realizations and lightbulb moments, but also having picked up the common sense coaching cues from other sports such as Basketball and Tennis, not just golf instructors.

Golf instruction is letting you down when it comes to getting you focussed on what really really matters.

Because you must forget about swing positions if you really want to play better golf and have more consistency in your golf swing and game and finally see the results you are after. Especially trying to slot into perfect backswing positions.

golf practice rangeYou only need to walk down the practice range and see the dozens of players not only wiling away at their drivers, but they are frequently looking back and their takeaway, half swing wrist hinge, swing plane and the top of the backswing…

Instead focus on the feeling and movement through the hitting zone as your priority at least mechanically (focussing on your target is number one priority by the way)

Trying to hit a position and thinking about it will kill your kinetic chain and in turn your golf swing consistency. The golf swing is just that a swing.

So when was the last time you threw a ball or hit something with a hammer, a racket or even swatted a fly… Did you focus on where your wrists were at the top of the backswing?

Did you worry that you were on plane?

I doubt it.

When you focus on technical positions especially in the backswing, and you find your self checking in the mirror where your club is or where you arm are on plane etc you are fighting a losing and pointless battle that is hurting your natural kinetic chain that you are perfectly good at performing.

You just need to stop looking into the mirror or checking where your club is pointing at the half way or top of your backswing position.

Now, here is a caveat:

Yes there are some important principles that you should be looking for that help deliver the club with the least amount of manipulation and force that could be classed as “backswing positions”.

However, with the essential components all in order (they are not complicated to achieve when you know what they are) you will find YOUR ideal swing backswing positions. Depending on the specific golf shot you are trying to create and depending on the club of choice, you will naturally hit the perfect backswing position that you desire without trying to place or force it there.

The movement, the flow and the natural way to have a simple golf swing is by letting things flow, not standing in a mirror or drawing lines on a computer screen.

You will see a big improvement in your ball striking, your consistency and accuracy if you allow the golf swing to be a movement not a connection of positions during your next golf practice and see improvement in your pursuit of a simple golf swing that is consistent and pain free.
